India's Palm Oil Imports Estimated to Drop 24% in April
★ India's palm oil imports in April dropped by 24% compared to the previous month, falling to 322,000 metric tonnes.
★ This marks the fifth consecutive month that palm oil imports have remained below normal levels.
★ The decline is attributed to palm oil being priced higher than soybean oil, prompting importers to opt for the cheaper alternative.
★ Soyoil imports in April increased by 2% to 363,000 tonnes.
★ Sunflower oil imports fell by nearly 6% to 180,000 tonnes, the lowest in the past seven months.
★ Total edible oil imports in April dropped by 11% to 865,000 tonnes.
★ Now that palm oil is trading at a discount to soyoil, imports are expected to increase starting in May.
★ Nepal’s edible oil imports dropped to 85,000 tonnes in April from 135,000 tonnes in March.
★ More than half of the oil imported into Nepal is re-exported to India tax-free under the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA).
