Increase in Area of Paddy, Maize and Pulses in Zaid Season; Groundnut and Millet Decline

New Delhi: Sowing of Zaid (summer) crops is nearing completion, with the total area reaching 60.22 lakh hectares by April 4, 2025 — 15% higher than the same period last year. According to official data, the area under paddy, maize, and pulses has seen an increase, while groundnut and millet acreage has declined.

Sowing has already covered over 84% of the season’s normal area of 71.34 lakh hectares. Zaid crops are sown between the harvesting of Rabi and the start of Kharif planting.

Key highlights:

  • Paddy area up by 17% to 31.98 lakh hectares

  • Maize area up 21.2% to 6.22 lakh hectares

  • Sorghum doubled to 31,000 hectares

  • Millet area down 9.5% to 3.15 lakh hectares

  • Pulses area up 26% to 11.04 lakh hectares, with moong and black gram seeing significant growth

Major states for Zaid pulses include Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat.
