Improved Export Performance for Canadian Peas in August

Winnipeg: Canada, a leading producer and exporter of peas, saw strong export performance for this key pulse crop in August 2026. Although unseasonal rains have disrupted the harvesting of the new crop, the availability of substantial carryover stocks from the previous year has ensured that export shipments face no hurdles. However, pea production in Canada is expected to decline during the 2026-27 season, and concerns remain regarding the quality of the carryover stocks, as the highest-quality produce has already been exported.

According to a report by the government agency StatsCan, Canadian pea exports surged from 83,300 tonnes in July to 148,441 tonnes in August 2026—an increase of approximately 64 percent compared to August 2025 shipments. China was the primary buyer in August 2026, importing 111,652 tonnes on its own. The United States ranked second, importing 12,763 tonnes of Canadian peas, while Thailand took third place with imports totaling 5,202 tonnes.

It is worth noting that while India is typically the largest importer of Canadian peas—specifically yellow peas—it did not feature in the list of the top three importers in August 2026. At that time, domestic pea prices remained relatively stable. Canada may have further opportunities to boost its pea exports due to ongoing disruptions in shipments from Russia and Ukraine.
