In light of the ongoing reports about the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a statement clarifying that HMPV is a respiratory disease similar to cold, cough, and flu-like symptoms, especially during the winter season. This illness is particularly dangerous for children and the elderly.

The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Services Department, after reviewing patient data related to respiratory diseases, confirmed that no cases of HMPV have been reported in the state so far. They also noted that the number of patients with respiratory issues has not shown a significant increase compared to last year.

However, to remain cautious, the Health Department has issued the following preventive guidelines for citizens:

  1. Covering Mouth and Nose: When coughing or sneezing, use a handkerchief or tissue to cover your mouth and nose to prevent the spread of germs.
  2. Hand Hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap and water or use a sanitizer.
  3. Avoid Crowded Places: Stay away from crowded areas to minimize exposure to potential infections.
  4. Stay Home When Sick: If you experience symptoms like fever, cough, or sneezing, avoid public places and stay at home. Limit contact with others if feeling unwell.
  5. Hydration and Nutrition: Drink plenty of water and maintain a nutritious diet to support your immune system.

The guidelines issued by the Karnataka Health Department are similar to those implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, as there are many similarities between COVID-19 and HMPV in terms of symptoms and transmission.
