Lucknow. During the current Rabi marketing season, the government procured 10.27 lakh tons of wheat in Uttar Pradesh—about one-third of the set target of 30 lakh tons.
Despite falling short of the target, this was still an improvement over last year’s procurement of 9.31 lakh tons. Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest wheat-producing state, but in terms of contributing wheat to the central pool, it ranks fifth after Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
According to official sources, government wheat procurement in the state was carried out between March 17 and June 15.
A total of 5,853 purchase centers were set up across Uttar Pradesh. Wheat was purchased from over 2 lakh farmers at the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,425 per quintal declared by the Central Government. The total payment made to farmers amounted to Rs 2,508.26 crore.
To boost procurement, the state government also deployed mobile purchase centers in rural areas. However, the total purchase still remained around 60 percent below the set target.
Although the government procurement touched a new record this year in Uttar Pradesh, private players such as traders and flour millers were also actively involved in large-scale purchases.
Wheat was bought at government centers daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., including holidays. Officials and staff visited villages to encourage farmers to sell their wheat at the MSP.
