Hyderabad: In Telangana—South India's most prominent rice-producing state—a target has been set for the government procurement of 9 million tonnes of paddy for the current Rabi marketing season. Of this, the procurement of over 1 million tonnes has already been completed, comprising 450,000 tonnes of fine-quality paddy and the remainder being coarse-grade paddy.

According to official sources, paddy procurement is proceeding well and remains on track to achieve the set target this time as well. The state government has released ₹500.20 crore to facilitate paddy procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), thereby ensuring timely payments to farmers.

Paddy is cultivated across approximately 2.225 million hectares in Telangana, and for the entire 2025-26 season, the production of this vital food grain is projected to rise to 15.2 million tonnes. For the Rabi season specifically, the government has set a procurement target of 3 million tonnes of fine-variety paddy and 6 million tonnes of other varieties.

To facilitate paddy procurement, 8,575 purchasing centers have been opened across Telangana, where the Food Department is actively engaged in procurement operations with full vigor. Within the state, 4,350 purchasing centers are being operated by PACS (Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies), 3,563 by 'Indira Kranthi Patham' (IKP), and 662 by other agencies. The lifting of the procured paddy stock is being carried out on a regular basis, and farmers are receiving payments for their produce within the stipulated timeframes.
