Demand to Stop Rice Exports from India to Bangladesh

New Delhi. Given the severe unrest and risks to shipments in Bangladesh, some exporters are demanding a halt to rice exports from India to that country. They argue that it would be prudent to ban rice exports until the situation normalizes.
Minority communities, including Hindus, are facing persecution in Bangladesh, and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka was attacked recently. The office of the Assistant High Commissioner in Chittagong was also surrounded.
Exporters say that the situation in Bangladesh has become so volatile that shipping rice there is extremely risky. They also revealed that Bangladesh has banned jute exports to India, forcing Indian jute mills to cut production. Radical groups in Bangladesh are raising anti-India slogans and holding demonstrations.
A section of Indian exporters, distressed by the chaotic events in Bangladesh, has expressed surprise, questioning whether the Indian government should take such risks and continue allowing rice exports to Bangladesh. India and its citizens are being targeted there.
If the central government does not impose a ban on rice exports, the exporters themselves should increase the price of rice for Bangladesh.
Both India and Bangladesh have stopped issuing visas to each other's citizens. Exporters hope that the government will seriously consider imposing a ban on rice exports to Bangladesh soon.
