Australia, a key player in the global pulse and canola market, has experienced a noticeable decline in exports during the 2023-24 marketing season compared to the previous year. The export of pulses such as lentils, grams, and peas dropped significantly, while canola shipments also saw a reduction.
Key export trends:
- Lentils: Exports fell from 1.8 million tonnes to 1.4 million tonnes.
- Desi gram: Exports declined from 695,343 tonnes to 517,798 tonnes.
- Whole peas: Exports dropped from 89,323 tonnes to 76,278 tonnes.
- Pea dal: Exports saw a decline from 39,808 tonnes to 27,567 tonnes.
- Faba beans: Exports dropped from 556,000 tonnes to 527,000 tonnes.
On the other hand, moong exports rose from 63,492 tonnes to 106,284 tonnes, indicating an increase in demand for this pulse. Canola exports decreased from 6.352 million tonnes to 5.94 million tonnes during the same period.
However, there was a noticeable improvement in exports in November 2024 as compared to November 2023, with significant increases in the export of whole peas, gram, faba beans, and moong. Canola exports also showed a substantial increase. Yet, lentil exports and pea dal exports remained subdued.
Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, the forecast suggests a sharp decline in lentil production and a rise in gram production, with India continuing to be a major importer of these commodities from Australia. Harvest preparations for pulses and canola crops are already underway in Australia, with the pulse sector expecting varied outcomes in production.
