Chandigarh. The Chief Minister of Haryana has directed officials to develop and expand adequate storage facilities for food grains, with the aim of protecting the grain—produced through the farmers' arduous labor—from damage and minimizing post-harvest losses.

The Chief Minister stated that infrastructure and facilities would be constructed within the state to ensure the safe storage of an additional 2 million tons of food grains. Officials have been instructed to undertake all necessary preparations to achieve this target.

Presiding over a review meeting regarding the five-year roadmap and action plan of the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, the Chief Minister further directed officials to formulate a practical and integrated plan for the construction of covered warehouses, the development and expansion of cold storage infrastructure, and the optimal utilization of available resources. Such initiatives are being undertaken under the ambit of "Haryana Vision 2047."

It is noteworthy that Haryana ranks among the leading states contributing rice and wheat to the Central Pool. This year, too, the government procurement of wheat in the state surged to over 8.1 million tons, significantly exceeding the set target of 7.2 million tons. Much like Punjab,

Haryana witnesses massive procurement of food grains; however, adequate facilities for their safe storage have historically been lacking. The state government is now making vigorous efforts to address and resolve this issue.

During the aforementioned meeting, the Food Secretary apprised the Chief Minister that, due to the lack of adequate warehouse facilities and the reliance on open storage methods, approximately 4 to 5 percent of the total food grain production in Haryana is wasted annually.
