Concerns Rise Over Kabuli Chickpea Quality in Canada

Saskatoon: Unseasonal rains in key growing regions of Western Canada are disrupting the Kabuli chickpea harvest, raising concerns about both yield and quality. This situation is driving prices upward; Kabuli chickpea rates have now reached 28–30 cents per pound. Prices vary depending on quality, size, and supply timelines.

Last year, Canada saw a sharp rise in Kabuli chickpea production, hitting a record high. While most of the high-quality stock was exported, a substantial volume of lower-quality produce remains in inventory.

Production is expected to decline this year, with quality likely to be compromised by unseasonal rains and pest or disease outbreaks. Consequently, stocks of high-quality, large-sized Kabuli chickpeas are projected to be limited, potentially reducing the volume available for export.

There is high demand and consumption of lower-quality Kabuli and Desi chickpeas for animal feed, but the Canadian market for this segment is relatively small. Given this, upward pressure on chickpea prices may intensify in the coming months. Sowing is set to begin soon in India, yet a lack of soil moisture is evident in major producing states.
