Canadian Lentils: Production and Export Update
Canada's lentil production in 2024 is estimated to reach 2.43 million tonnes, 162,000 tonnes lower than the previous estimate.
In 2023 and 2020 production was 1.8 and 2.9 million tonnes respectively, meaning this year's production is 35% higher but still lower than 2020.
Total supply including production and carry-in stock is increased by 33% to 2.7 million tonnes, the largest supply since 2020/21.

Global Production:
Global lentil production in 2024 among major producers is about 6.6 million tonnes, a 15% increase from the 5.7 million tonnes last year.

Exports and Demand:
Canada's lentil exports from August to October 2024 reached 581,000 tonnes, 21% higher than last year.
Canada exported 71,000 tonnes of lentils during the Christmas break.
Total exports for 2025 are expected to be 2 million tonnes, up from 1.65 million tonnes last year.

Outlook:
Strong export demand continues, and Canada, Australia, and Russia are expected to increase lentil acreage in 2025.
Competition between Canada and Australia is intensifying, putting pressure on international prices.
Overall, lentil availability in international markets is expected to remain good.
