Saskatoon. Pea sowing in Canada has already ended and this time the weather and rainfall conditions have also remained favorable for the crop to a large extent. Most of the pea production in Canada takes place in the province of Saskatchewan, where the condition of the crop is said to be encouraging.
Government body StatsCan, in its report of June 27, has estimated the total pea sowing area in Canada to increase by 5.4 percent to 32 lakh acres (about 13 lakh hectares) as compared to 2023. According to the report,
the area of yellow peas was 26 lakh acres and the area of green peas was 4.60 lakh acres. After the year 2017, most of the yellow peas exports from Canada have been to China.
An average annual shipment of 1618 lakh tonnes is being done there. After this, annual export of about 3 lakh tonnes of peas to Bangladesh and about 1.00 lakh tonnes to Pakistan has been taking place. China also remains the most prominent buyer of Canadian green peas.
During the 2024-25 season, about 28 lakh tonnes of yellow peas are estimated to be produced in Canada, out of which about 7 lakh tonnes are expected to be used to meet domestic demand and requirement and a surplus stock of 18.20 lakh tonnes may remain for export purpose.
The equation of export of Canadian yellow peas will change in the marketing season of 2024-25 as now India has also become active in its import.
This may lead to less export of yellow peas from Canada to other importing countries including China.
The India arrival price of Canadian yellow peas for July / August delivery was running at an average of $ 501 per tonne between June 6 and 27, which fell to $ 480 per tonne on July 4. This price further dropped to $470 per tonne for shipments in the months following this, i.e.
September-October 2024. The import price of Canadian yellow peas is expected to weaken due to the possibility of better production.
