The United States has seen a significant increase in its lentil and gram (chickpea) production in 2024. According to the USDA report:
Lentil production in the US reached 410,640 tons, a 64% increase from 2023. This surge was due to a 78% increase in the sowing area, which grew to 936,000 acres. The harvest-ready area was 903,000 acres, 79% higher than the previous year.
However, the average yield decreased slightly to 1,002 pounds per acre, down 87 pounds compared to 2023. Key producing states for lentils include Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Washington.
Gram production also saw a rise of 23% in 2024, reaching 258,232 tons. This increase was supported by a 38% growth in sowing area, which reached 502,000 acres, with 492,400 acres harvested.
The average yield for gram decreased by 149 pounds to 1,144 pounds per acre, limiting the production increase.
The main gram-producing states include California, Idaho, Washington, Montana, and North Dakota.
In both cases, while the sowing areas expanded significantly, the decrease in average yields limited the overall gains in production.
