New Delhi. Although India is almost self-sufficient in terms of rice, wheat and coarse grains, it is far behind in achieving self-sufficiency in the production of pulses and oilseeds.
As a result, the country has to import huge quantities of pulses and edible oils from abroad, which costs huge amounts of precious foreign currency.
The Prime Minister himself has expressed concern over this and has been emphasizing the need to increase production from indigenous sources.
In recent years, there has been a good increase in the domestic production of pulses and oilseeds, but the demand and consumption of pulses and edible oils has increased at an even faster pace.
Now, former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chauhan has been made the Union Agriculture Minister.
He is expected to do excellent work towards making India self-sufficient in the production of pulses and oilseeds and with cooperation, he has also started vigorous efforts for this.
The government has set a target of making the country self-sufficient in pulses production by the year 2027-28 and at the same time has planned to focus on increasing the production of oilseeds.
If the plan and effort are successful, it will be a great achievement for India. According to official sources, the Ministry of Agriculture under the leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan will focus on achieving self-sufficiency in pulses by 2027-28 and can implement new schemes to increase the production of oilseeds.
Ramnath Thakur and Bhagirath Chaudhary have been made Ministers of State to assist Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
They have had a meeting with senior officials of the Agriculture Ministry and they have also been made aware of their responsibilities.
The Agriculture Minister has stressed the need to provide good quality fertilizers and seeds to farmers at reasonable prices for sowing crops in the current Kharif season. This time good monsoon rains will also help the farmers.
