New Delhi: Acting upon a special request from the domestic industry, the Union Ministry of Food has approved an additional export quota of 87,587 tonnes of sugar for the current marketing season (October–September) of 2025–26.
It is noteworthy that the government had initially permitted the export of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar for the ongoing marketing season, and subsequently, in February, allocated an additional export quota of 500,000 tonnes.
Under this additional quota of 500,000 tonnes, millers had applied for the allocation of a specific portion; based on these applications, the Ministry of Food approved an export quota totaling 87,587 tonnes.
The remaining portion of the sugar export quota will remain unutilized. Mills are required to export the sugar corresponding to their total allocated quota by June 30, 2026. Mills that export at least 70 percent of their allocated quota by June 30 will be granted an additional quota,
the shipment of which must be completed by September 30, 2026. By the end of February 2026, approximately 315,000 tonnes of sugar had been exported from the country.
