New Delhi. Flour millers and processors are showing keen interest in purchasing government-held wheat offered under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS), as the supply and availability situation in wholesale markets (mandis) becomes increasingly challenging. In an e-auction conducted by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) on October 28, 2026, 100,000 tonnes of wheat were offered, of which approximately 95,000 tonnes were sold. Driven by strong demand during the Diwali festival, nearly the entire quantity offered was purchased across most states.
The Food Corporation offered wheat for sale in over 20 states, with specific quantities allocated to each. In 17 of these states, 100% of the allocated wheat was sold—a clear indication that millers in most regions are in urgent need of wheat.
Notably, the entire quantity offered was purchased in major wheat-producing states, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, significant volumes were procured in key consuming states such as Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. In the eastern states—including Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal—the entire offered quantity was lifted; in these regions, market prices for wheat remain high and firm.
Millers point out that the robust procurement is not driven solely by the Diwali festival; rather, the pace of buying is accelerated by the insufficient arrival of stocks in the mandis, coupled with the high, ongoing operational requirements of the industry.
