Yellow pea prices stable in Canada amid limited trading

The price of yellow peas in Canada has remained relatively stable, fluctuating between $10.50 and $11.00 per bushel, amidst limited trading activity.

The main focus for producers and exporters is the Indian market, where the duty-free import deadline for yellow peas is set to expire on December 31. If this period is not extended, Canada and Russia may face challenges in selling their substantial stocks of yellow peas.

Importers in India have become cautious about placing orders for yellow peas for delivery in the coming year, adopting a "wait and watch" approach.

The demand for green peas has remained steady, causing their price to rise to around $16.50 per bushel in some regions.

Additionally, prices for Maple Magar peas are in the range of $20 to $24 per bushel. Despite a slight increase in pea production in Canada during the 2024-25 season, there is concern that farmer interest in cultivating peas may decline in the next season.

Regarding exports, the price for yellow peas destined for India for December-January shipment is quoted at $450 per tonne, while the price from Russia for November-December delivery is around $400 per tonne.

The uncertainty surrounding India's future import policy for yellow peas, particularly whether the government will extend the duty-free import period, will play a crucial role in shaping market conditions. Meanwhile, the import of gram from Australia continues.

While Canada also exports peas to other countries, including China, stockpiles are strong there as well, which reduces the likelihood of significant price increases in the near future.
