New Delhi. During the current week, the number of dams and reservoirs in the country with less than 50 percent water storage has come down to a single number, that is, below 10.

According to the new report of the Central Water Commission (CWC), 87 percent of the total storage capacity of 155 major dams and reservoirs in the country is present, which is almost the same as last week.

The water level has decreased in some reservoirs, while it has increased in some other reservoirs. Heavy rains are continuing in South India.

According to the weekly bulletin of the commission, the total water storage capacity of 155 dams and reservoirs is 180.852 billion cubic meters (BCM), while at present there is a storage of 157.671 BCM or 87 percent water.

This storage is more than last year as well as the ten-year average level. However, the decrease in water level in some areas has caused some concern.

According to the report, 108 reservoirs have more than 80 percent water storage as compared to their capacity, while the number of reservoirs with less than 50 percent water storage has come down to 9. Five states have less water than the normal storage capacity.

Generally, due to the high water level in dams and reservoirs and the continuation of heavy rainfall in South India, there will not be much difficulty in irrigating Rabi crops, but due to low water reserves in the northwestern states, some problems may arise. The crisis is likely to be more serious in Rajasthan.

According to the Meteorological Department, data is collected from 723 districts of the country. Out of this, 62 percent of the districts received less or very less rainfall than normal between 1 and 16 October 2024. However, during the southwest monsoon season, 8 percent more rainfall than the normal average was recorded at the national level.

Although that monsoon has now departed, but in many parts of the country, there is still a sufficient amount of moisture in the soil of the fields, which is helping the farmers in doing early sowing of Rabi crops. There is heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
