SEA Urges Resumption of Organic Soybean Exports to the U.S.
★ The Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA) has appealed to the Indian government to prioritize the resumption of organic, non-GMO soybean and soybean meal exports to the U.S. during ongoing Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations.
★ According to SEA, India previously exported 150,000 to 200,000 tons annually of these products to the U.S. However, due to opposition from domestic U.S. producers, safeguard duties were imposed, effectively halting the trade.
★ SEA President Sanjeev Asthana emphasized that the Ministry of Commerce must include the restoration of these exports as a key agenda item in the BTA talks with the U.S.
★ Additionally, SEA has requested the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to standardize packaging sizes for edible oils. Since the introduction of new regulations in 2022, the market has seen inconsistent pack sizes like 800g, 810g, and 850g, which SEA says is confusing for consumers and hinders price comparisons.
