Pulses area increased by 7.5 percent to reach above 126 lakh hectares

New Delhi. Despite the decrease in sowing of Urad and Moth, due to a huge increase in the area of Tuvar and Moong,
the total production area of pulses crops during Kharif season has increased to 126.20 lakh hectares, which is 7.5 percent more than the sowing area of 117.39 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
Under this, the production area of Arhar (Tuvar) increased by 5 lakh hectares from 40.74 lakh hectares to 45.78 lakh hectares and the sowing area of Moong increased by 4 lakh hectares from 31.05 lakh hectares to 35.06 lakh hectares, but the area of Urad decreased by 1.70 lakh hectares from 31.71 lakh hectares and got stuck at 30.02 lakh hectares.
In this way, there has been a good increase in the sowing area of pulses crops, but it is doubtful whether the production will increase accordingly.
In fact, there has been so much monsoon rain in some important producing areas that the fields are flooded.
The urad and moong crops are not able to tolerate water logging for a long time and there is a danger of them rotting.
The early sown crops of these two pulses have started ripening and their harvesting is going to begin soon.
Rain at such a time can increase the moisture content in the grain. And its quality can deteriorate. As far as tuvar is concerned, its new crop comes in December-January, so it has relatively less danger.
