News Capsule: Delay in Government Cotton Procurement Hurts Farmers
★ Farmers in Punjab are facing heavy losses due to delays in cotton procurement and registration issues with the “Kapas Kisan” mobile app. According to data from the Punjab State Agricultural Marketing Board, as of October 14, 2025, around 89,209 quintals of cotton had arrived in the markets, out of which 88,991 quintals were purchased. Of this, 44,368 quintals were sold below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), with prices falling as low as ₹3,000 per quintal, compared to the MSP range of ₹7,710 to ₹8,110 per quintal.
★ Farmers are facing several technical and documentation-related difficulties in the registration process through the Kapas Kisan app. The state agriculture minister has urged the central government to intervene immediately so that farmers can sell their cotton at MSP. He described the absence of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) from procurement operations as a serious concern for farmers.
★ About 30,000 acres of cotton crop have been destroyed due to flooding, worsening the situation further. Although CCI has extended the registration deadline to October 31, farmers are demanding relaxation in the new rules for this year.
