China has seen a significant increase in the import of moong beans from countries like Uzbekistan, Australia, Indonesia, and Myanmar in recent years.
According to the latest data from the General Customs Administration of China, during the first 11 months of 2024, China's total import of moong beans reached 543,000 tonnes, which is a 13,000-tonne increase compared to the same period in 2023. The data for December 2024 has not yet been released.
The import volume of moong beans in China surged in November 2024, reaching 43,612 tonnes, which was 32% higher than the 33,031 tonnes imported in October.
Uzbekistan led the supply with 21,667 tonnes, followed by Indonesia with 8,285 tonnes and Myanmar with 4,767 tonnes.
India, which used to be a major importer of moong beans from Myanmar, banned the import of these beans in February 2022 to promote domestic production and ensure better returns for local farmers.
As a result, Myanmar sought alternative markets for its moong beans, particularly in China, Thailand, and the European Union.
In contrast, China saw a substantial decline in pea imports in 2024 compared to 2023, indicating shifting trends in legume imports.
