New Delhi. Arrivals of the new crop of gram—the most prominent produce of the Rabi season—have begun to gain momentum across various markets, and imports from abroad are also continuing on a regular basis. Consequently, prices are coming under pressure.

In regions where market rates have dropped below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), government procurement of the commodity has commenced.

So far, more than 100,000 tonnes of gram have been procured for the central buffer stock. The government is confident that total procurement for the entire marketing season could reach 1 million tonnes.

Currently, government procurement of gram is underway in states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, while procurement is set to begin shortly in top-producing provinces like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Procurement of Masoor (red lentils) has also commenced, while procurement of the Kharif-season Tur (pigeon pea) has already exceeded 200,000 tonnes and is projected to reach 500,000 tonnes.
