New Delhi. The demand for wheat bran in the animal feed manufacturing industry started weakening, due to which its prices have fallen.
According to the data received, in the Rabi season of 2022-23, the average price of bran was 92 percent relative to the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat, but in the Rabi season of 2023-24, it increased to Rs 2200 per quintal, which was 4 percent higher than the MSP of Rs 2125 per quintal.
In the season of 2024-25, the minimum support price of wheat was increased by Rs 150 to Rs 2275 per quintal. In May 2025, the price of bran jumped to a high of Rs 2500 per quintal at one time, but now it has fallen to around Rs 2000 per quintal.
Industry analysts say that due to the increasing popularity of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) in animal feed and poultry feed manufacturing and excess supply, not only the demand for soybean DOC is getting affected but the consumption of wheat bran is also decreasing, which has started adversely affecting the prices.
It is worth noting that since the year 2022, there is a ban on the commercial export of wheat and its value-added products—maida, semolina and bran—while now the industrial demand for bran in the domestic sector has started weakening.
In view of this, the wheat processing industry has urged the Central Government to allow the export of bran. If permission is granted for the export of wheat products, there may be some improvement in the economic condition of the industry, which is currently doing its business on very low margins.
DDGS is a co-product produced in the process of ethanol production which is rich in protein and hence it is being used extensively as a better alternative to soymeal and wheat bran in animal feed manufacturing.
This has been adversely affecting the soybean crushing-processing industry and now the wheat processing industry is also getting affected.
In recent times, the price of wheat bran has fallen drastically, due to which the profit of the manufacturers is continuously decreasing.
