Cotton Sowing Update
★ Cotton acreage in India is likely to rise by 7 percent, expected to increase from last year's 113.60 lakh hectares.
★ As of June 20, cotton has been sown on 31.25 lakh hectares.
★ Early sowing has been impacted in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh due to deficient rainfall and a prolonged dry spell.
★ Telangana is facing a 23 percent rainfall deficit. Two-thirds of districts are affected, and farmers fear losing their first sowing.
★ Karnataka has reported 40 percent higher cotton acreage, with 3.35 lakh hectares sown, up from 2.40 lakh hectares last year.
★ Gujarat may see a 5 percent drop in acreage as farmers in Saurashtra shift from cotton to groundnut.
★ Farmer interest in North India remains weak due to low profitability, recurring pink bollworm infestations, and water issues.
★ Punjab’s subsidy on Bt cotton has had limited impact. Farmers remain indifferent despite the state’s support.
★ In Maharashtra, cotton acreage may vary by ±2 percent.
★ Northern states may see a 10 percent increase, while southern states could witness a 15 to 25 percent rise. Experts are calling for Centre-State coordination under the “TMC 2.0” initiative to boost cotton cultivation.
