Melbourne, April 2025 – Driven by strong demand from India and Bangladesh, Australia's total pulse exports reached a record 3.8 million tonnes in 2024, marking a 12% increase over 2023.
India emerged as the largest buyer, importing over 1.6 million tonnes — 42% of Australia's total pulse exports.
This surge was supported by India's move to make Desi gram (chana) imports duty-free in May 2024, boosting import volumes to an all-time high. India also imported a significant quantity of lentils from Australia.
Australia remains the world's top exporter of Desi gram and ranks second after Canada in lentil exports. Additionally, Australia exports large volumes of faba beans, peas, and lupins, with Egypt being the leading importer of faba beans.
After India, Bangladesh was the second-largest destination, importing 674,000 tonnes, mainly Desi gram and red lentils. Egypt followed closely with imports of 591,000 tonnes, accounting for 15% of Australia’s total pulse exports.
Between 2013 and 2024, Australian pulse exports to India rose by 14.4%, to Egypt by 9.9%, and to Bangladesh by 7%. In 2024, gram, lentils, and faba beans together made up about 94% of Australia’s pulse exports, including 1.6 million tonnes of gram and 1.3 million tonnes of lentils.
