Farmers in Rajasthan Forced to Sell Moong Below MSP

Bikaner: Arrivals of the new crop have commenced in Rajasthan—the country's leading Moong (green gram) producing state—yet no decision has been made regarding government procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Furthermore, demand from pulse millers, traders, and stockists remains weak. Consequently, farmers are being compelled to sell their Moong stocks at prices below the MSP.

During the first 18 days of the current month, Rajasthan's *mandis* (wholesale markets) witnessed a massive influx of approximately 63,000 tonnes of new Moong; this is nearly 70 times the supply of 6,453 tonnes recorded during the same period in 2025. In the corresponding period of 2024, the supply stood at 7,574 tonnes.

Last year, the sowing area for Moong in Rajasthan during the Kharif season had expanded to 26.57 lakh hectares. While the sowing target for this year was set at 26.50 lakh hectares, the actual acreage fell by 13 percent, settling at 23.17 lakh hectares. During the previous Kharif season, Moong production in Rajasthan was estimated at 13.89 lakh tonnes, accounting for approximately 72 percent of the total national output. Although there was some improvement in the sowing area for Moth bean, it still fell slightly short of the targeted 10 lakh hectares.

It is understood that the heavy arrivals in the *mandis* are exerting downward pressure on Moong prices. The MSP for Moong for the 2026-27 season has been fixed at ₹8,780 per quintal, whereas the average market price in the state's *mandis* is hovering between ₹7,400 and ₹7,500 per quintal.
