Paddy-Rice prices fall due to weak business
New Delhi. Due to weak demand from millers-processors, the price of paddy remained soft in various markets of the country during the week of 12-18 July. The arrival of non-Basmati rice of food grain category is decreasing very much and the supply of Basmati rice is also in off season. The transplantation of Kharif paddy is going on in full swing, the harvesting and preparation of which will start in October.
Delhi
During the week under review, daily arrival of paddy in Delhi's Narela Mandi was between 2000-4000 bags and amid weak business, the price of 1509 hands fell by Rs 110 to Rs 2950 per quintal and the price of 1718 fell by Rs 42 to Rs 3030 per quintal.
Chhattisgarh
Normal price fluctuations were observed with average daily arrivals of 4000-6000 bags of paddy at Bhatapara in Chhattisgarh and 6000/8000 bags at Rajim. Mahamaya paddy prices in Bhatapara rose by Rs 100 to Rs 2100/2200 per quintal, while Swarna prices in Rajim improved by Rs 55 to Rs 1880 per quintal.
Uttar Pradesh/Rajasthan
Mandis like Jahangirabad, Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Kota and Bundi in Rajasthan are witnessing small arrivals of paddy and limited price fluctuations are being observed based on demand. Sathi paddy arrivals in Shahjahanpur market range were between 15,000 and 30,000 bags, but prices fell by Rs 200 per quintal.
Rice
As far as rice is concerned, its export demand remains strong, while there is no problem of supply and availability. Exporters are getting sufficient quantity of rice as per their requirement and there is no shortage of rice with the domestic sellers as well as the millers. Huge stock of rice is available in government warehouses. The exchange rate of rupee against dollar remains at an attractive level from the point of view of rice export business. The price of 1 US dollar has increased to above 86 rupees. The price of rice remains stable in Bhatpara Mandi. It is worth mentioning that normal rice from Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh-Orissa and Basmati rice from Punjab-Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand are exported on a large scale.
Punjab / Amritsar
The rice market in Amritsar, Punjab remained almost calm and no special movement was seen in prices in Rajim of Chhattisgarh as well. But in Nagar Mandi of Uttarakhand, the price of rice fluctuated from 200 to 400 rupees per quintal. There the price of 1121 Sela rice fell by Rs 200 per quintal, the prices of 1509 Steam and Sela and Sugandha Sela rice fell by Rs 300-300 per quintal and the price of Sugandha Steam fell by Rs 400 per quintal, whereas the prices of 1121 Steam and Pusa Basmati Steam increased by Rs 200-200 per quintal and the price of Pusa Basmati Sela increased by Rs 500 per quintal. In Karnal, Haryana, the prices of some varieties of rice remained high by Rs 100 per quintal.
