Monthly Import Data: Sharp Surge in Brazil’s Share
★ In October, India imported a total of 1.07 lakh tons of urad, of which 68,043 tons came from Myanmar and 39,121 tons from Brazil.
★ In September, total imports stood at 1.26 lakh tons, with Myanmar supplying 81,313 tons and Brazil 44,882 tons.
★ Within just two months, Brazil’s share reached nearly half of Myanmar’s level—marking the strongest rise so far.
★ According to April–August 2025 import data, total urad imports stood at 2.86 lakh tons, of which Myanmar supplied 2.37 lakh tons and Brazil approximately 45,000 tons.
★ As per the annual data for April–March 2024–25, out of total imports of 8.2 lakh tons, 0.84 lakh tons came from Brazil and 7.15 lakh tons from Myanmar.
★ These figures clearly show that Brazil’s share has expanded rapidly within just one year.
★ This year, Brazil’s urad production is expected to rise from 60,000 tons to more than 1 lakh tons.
★ Brazilian crop quality is considered superior to Myanmar’s, with cleaner grains, bigger size, and better grades.
★ Due to this better quality, Brazilian urad commands higher prices in the Indian market, giving strong incentives to its farmers and exporters.
★ However, Brazil’s overall production is still much lower than Myanmar’s, and availability from Brazil may remain limited in the coming months.
★ If strong buying interest from India continues, urad cultivation in Brazil could double next year.
★ Compared to Myanmar, Brazil has a larger cultivable area, and with sufficient market support, its production has the potential to grow to any scale.
