Ahmedabad. Due to specific reasons, the pace of Rabi crop sowing in Gujarat, the western state of India, remained slow until last week, but it is expected to pick up in the coming days.
With the vigorous harvesting of Kharif crops, fields are quickly becoming vacant for Rabi crop sowing.
Like most other states, the weather in Gujarat has become favorable, and farmers are becoming more active in farming.
During the week of November 10th, the total Rabi crop production area in Gujarat reached only 2.72 lakh hectares, which was 37,000 hectares lower than the 3.09 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
Wheat, maize, and gram acreage remained ahead of last year, but mustard, sugarcane, and some spice crops saw a decline.
It is expected that mustard sowing will pick up soon, as its price is much higher than the government support price.
The minimum support price of wheat has been increased by ₹160 per quintal, which is expected to increase farmers' enthusiasm for sowing it.
It's worth noting that Gujarat is a significant producer of chickpea, mustard, cumin, coriander, fennel, and psyllium.
Sowing of cumin and coriander is ahead of last year, but the acreage under fennel and psyllium is lagging behind. This is expected to increase further.
