Request to Authorize Procurement of 131 Lakh Tonnes of Wheat in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal. In light of excellent production and robust arrivals in the *mandis* (agricultural markets), the Madhya Pradesh government has urged the Centre to increase the wheat procurement target for the state to 131 lakh tonnes.
It is noteworthy that this target in Madhya Pradesh had already been revised upward from 78 lakh tonnes to 100 lakh tonnes. Now, a request has been made to further increase this figure by another 31 lakh tonnes. If this request is accepted, it would mark the highest-ever wheat procurement target for Madhya Pradesh.
Following Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh is the second-largest wheat-producing state in India. In April, government wheat procurement in the state was lagging behind last year's figures by nearly 70 percent at one point; however, the pace accelerated dramatically in May.
In a short span of time, total wheat procurement surpassed even last year's entire procurement volume and drew close to the currently set target.
Consequently, at the national level as well, wheat procurement has reached very close to the set target of 345 lakh tonnes, and it is expected to exceed this target in the near future. However, this time around, there has been a higher volume of procurement of lower-quality wheat—specifically, grain that is discolored and lacking luster.
