Ahmedabad. In Gujarat, the western state of India, not only is the area under Rabi crops lagging behind last year, but the pace of sowing is also slowing. While neighboring Maharashtra has already cultivated 9.15 lakh hectares and Rajasthan 60.53 lakh hectares, Gujarat's acreage hasn't even reached 3 lakh hectares. However, the pace of sowing is expected to accelerate in the coming years.
According to the latest weekly data from the State Agriculture Department, the total Rabi crop area in Gujarat reached 2.72 lakh hectares as of November 10th, a decrease of 3.09 lakh hectares from the same period last year. The good news is that spice crop sowing has also begun alongside the main Rabi crops, with signs of an increase in cumin and coriander acreage.
According to official data, during the current Rabi season, the area under cereal crops in Gujarat increased from 18,000 hectares to 24,000 hectares compared to last year. However, the area under pulses declined from 47,000 hectares to 46,000 hectares, the area under oilseeds declined from 77,000 hectares to 59,000 hectares, and the area under sugarcane fell from 64,000 hectares to 46,000 hectares.
Among cereal crops, the area under wheat and maize has increased, but the area under sorghum has been sown in a smaller area. The area under wheat has reached 10,000 hectares and the area under maize has reached 14,000 hectares. There is a strong possibility that the pace of sowing will accelerate in the future.
Among pulse crops, the area under gram production jumped from 14,000 hectares to 37,000 hectares, but the area under other pulses has declined from 32,000 hectares to 9,000 hectares. On the other hand, in the category of oilseed crops, the area under mustard production decreased from 76 thousand hectares to 59 thousand hectares, contrary to expectations.
Among spice crops, the area under cumin production jumped from 1174 hectares to 3716 hectares, and the area under coriander increased from 382 hectares to 1066 hectares, but the area under isabgol decreased from 94 hectares to 10 hectares, and the area under fennel fell from 1432 hectares to 913 hectares. Sowing of Rabi crops will continue for a long time.
