Pulse Sowing in Myanmar
Urad (Black Matpe): Production Likely Slightly Lower Than Last Year's Record
★ Myanmar has begun sowing black matpe, following last year’s record output of around 1 million tonnes. This season, production is expected to be slightly lower, in the range of 900,000–1 million tonnes.
★ Prices have remained weak, but exports are stable. So far, Myanmar has exported nearly 700,000 tonnes of black matpe, of which 600,000 tonnes have gone to India. With India’s kharif production of urad coming in lower this year, demand from India is expected to remain strong in 2026.

Pigeon Pea (Tur/Toor): Production Expected to Rise Sharply
★ Myanmar’s pigeon pea output is projected to increase by about 50,000–60,000 tonnes this season. Last year, production stood at 350,000–360,000 tonnes, and this year it is likely to exceed that level.
★ However, farmers did not expand acreage significantly due to weak prices in the last six months and cheaper supplies from African origins.
★ Myanmar has shipped around 330,000 tonnes of pigeon peas to India so far this year, averaging 33,000 tonnes per month.
★ With the Indian government announcing higher MSP procurement, domestic prices in India have strengthened, which could boost Myanmar’s exports further.
★ Additionally, India’s 30% import duty on yellow peas is expected to support prices of tur, lentils, and chana.

Mung Bean: High Prices Likely to Boost Sowing This Season
★ Myanmar has started sowing its largest mung bean crop of the year this week. Favourable weather conditions and strong prices have encouraged farmers to increase acreage.
★ This season’s mung bean production is estimated at 500,000–600,000 tonnes, with the harvest expected between late January and early February.
★ Over the past year, mung prices have stayed above USD 1,000 per tonne—nearly 30% higher than urad.
★ Since yields, costs, and growing conditions for mung and urad are largely similar, farmers are shifting towards mung due to stronger returns.
