News Capsule: Surplus of Low-Quality Kabuli Chickpeas in Canada
★ This year, Canada has seen a sharp rise in the production of low-quality chickpeas (No. 3/sample grade), reaching 1.6–2 lakh tonnes, compared to just 8,600 tonnes last year. The surge in poor-quality output is mainly due to increased acreage, heavy rains in ★ July, and rain–frost conditions in September, which affected grain quality.
★ Low-quality chickpeas are primarily used in the pet food industry, but since feed supplies are already booked until 2027, it may take nearly two years to clear the existing stocks.
★ With strong availability from the U.S., Argentina, and Turkey, global competition in chickpeas is expected to remain intense, although the demand for good-quality chickpeas continues to be firm.

Impact on India
★ India and Canada compete in the global Kabuli chickpea export market, but this year, India’s Kabuli crop is strong, and exports are being well supported.
★ From April to August, India exported 0.82 lakh tonnes of Kabuli chickpeas, compared to 0.58 lakh tonnes during the same period last year. For the entire previous financial year, India exported 1.32 lakh tonnes.
★ With rising global demand, Indian Kabuli chickpea prices may strengthen further, increasing the probability of higher market levels ahead.
