Australia's wheat exports rise to nearly 23.5 million tonnes

Sydney. Data from the government agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), shows that gross wheat exports from Australia during the 2024-25 marketing season (October-September) increased to 23.48 million tonnes, an increase of 3.76 million tonnes over the 2023-24 season's total shipment of 19.72 million tonnes, and the fourth highest ever.
Previously, Australia's highest wheat exports were 31.77 million tonnes in the 2022-23 season, compared to 27.45 million tonnes in the 2021-22 season and 23.71 million tonnes in the 2020-21 season. Export performance in 2023-24 was weak.
According to the ABS report, although Australia's wheat exports during the 2024-25 season fell by 72 percent from 3.76 million tons to 1.05 million tons in the 2023-24 marketing season, some other countries, including Indonesia, compensated for this.
Australian wheat exports to Indonesia jumped to 4.47 million tons. Additionally, exports to the Philippines (3.53 million tons), Thailand (1.62 million tons), Vietnam (1.57 million tons), and South Korea (1.46 million tons). China became the eighth-largest importer of Australian wheat with 1.05 million tons.
China previously imported 3.76 million tons of wheat from Australia in the 2023-24 marketing season and a record 7.59 million tons in the 2022-23 marketing season.
Australia's largest wheat exports are to countries in Southeast and Far East Asia. This includes Japan, Malaysia, and Myanmar.
South Asian countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as some countries in Central and West Asia, also import significant quantities of wheat from Australia. Australia is among the top five wheat exporting countries.
