New Delhi. India's Ethanol Blending (EBP) program is experiencing significant progress. A significant increase in ethanol production has significantly increased its blending levels in petrol.
According to available data, a total of 1,002.99 crore liters of ethanol was supplied to oil marketing companies (OMCs) during the 2024-25 marketing season (November-October).
Of this, ethanol produced from grains (mainly maize and rice) accounted for 6,867.9 million liters, and ethanol produced from sugarcane components accounted for 3,160 million liters.
As a result, India has achieved significant progress in its ethanol blending program. Initially, the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol was set for 2030, but it was achieved in 2025, five years ahead of schedule.
As a result, India has been successful in reducing its dependence on crude oil imports and significantly reducing costs. It is worth noting that India spends the most foreign exchange on petroleum imports, and the ethanol blending program is proving helpful in curbing this.
For the current marketing season (November-October) 2025-26, oil (petroleum) marketing companies have been allocated quotas for the supply of approximately 10.48 billion liters of ethanol, while distilleries have offered to supply 17.76 billion liters.
This is the first round of allocation. In this round, OMCs invited tenders for the supply of a total of 10.5 billion liters of ethanol.
Of the ethanol allocations for the first round, corn-based ethanol constitutes the largest amount at 478.90 crore liters (45.68 percent).
After this, the quantity of ethanol produced from rice of Food Corporation of India (FCI) is about 233.30 crore litres (22.25%), quantity of ethanol produced from sugarcane juice is 165.90 crore litres,
quantity of B heavy molasses ethanol is 110.50 crore litres, quantity of ethanol from damaged grains is 47.60 crore litres and quantity of ethanol from C heavy molasses is 12.20 crore litres. And the marketing season has started from 1st November 2025.
